The Environment
What makes Masca special?
Masca is one of the most remote and spectacular spots on Tenerife. Nestled in the heart of the Teno Massif, the hamlet of Masca and its ravine form a landscape unique to the Canary Islands: volcanic cliffs rising up to 600 metres, subtropical vegetation and an unspoilt cove next to the Los Gigantes Cliffs.
The Masca Gorge is the most famous walking route in Tenerife and one of the most challenging in the Canary Islands. Hiking down it requires official authorisation and, on many sections, the presence of a qualified guide. At El Cardón, we have specialised in this route for over 25 years: we know every step, every risk and every secret of the ravine.
As well as the ravine, the area around Masca offers other walking routes of varying levels of difficulty: from the Masca Skyline, which is accessible and offers panoramic views, to the self-guided descent for more independent walkers. Three ways to experience Masca, all organised by a single specialist company.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Masca
We’ve answered the most common questions to help you prepare for your adventure in the Masca Gorge.
¿Se necesita permiso para bajar el Barranco de Masca?
Yes. Since 2016, access to the Masca Gorge has been regulated and requires an official permit issued by the Tenerife Island Council. The number of people allowed in each day is limited. At El Cardón, we take care of arranging all the necessary permits for our groups, for both guided and self-guided walks.
¿Qué nivel de dificultad tiene el Barranco de Masca?
The Masca Gorge is of medium difficulty. The descent, which is approximately 5 km long, follows uneven volcanic terrain, with sections of loose stones, natural steps and some sections where you will need to use your hands for support. It is not a technical route, but it does require a good level of fitness and suitable hiking boots. The total duration (including the return boat trip) is 5 to 6 hours.
¿Cuál es la edad mínima para participar?
For the guided Masca Gorge hike, the recommended minimum age is 8 years. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The activity is not suitable for people with serious cardiorespiratory conditions, pregnant women or people with reduced mobility. For the Masca Skyline Hike, the route is more accessible and suitable for families with children aged 6 and over.
¿Qué calzado y ropa debo llevar?
It is essential to wear hiking or walking boots with a grippy sole (such as Vibram). The gorge’s site staff (TRAGSA) may refuse entry if your footwear is unsuitable. We also recommend: comfortable hiking clothes, sun protection (sunglasses, a hat and sun cream), water (at least 2 litres), a packed lunch or energy-boosting snacks, and a small rucksack. In summer, the gorge can get very hot.
¿Cómo se regresa desde la cala de Masca?
The return journey from Cala de Masca is by boat to Los Gigantes or Playa de la Arena. The boat trip is included in the price of all our ravine descent tours. Once at the harbour, we’ll organise your return transport to the starting point (included in guided tours).
¿Qué diferencia hay entre el Barranco con guía y el autoguiado?
The guided tour includes a qualified professional guide who accompanies the group throughout the route, explains the natural surroundings and ensures safety. This is the recommended option for those doing the route for the first time or who prefer a more organised experience. The self-guided route is for experienced walkers who prefer to go at their own pace. Both options include the access permit and the return boat journey.
¿Se puede hacer el Barranco de Masca todo el año?
The gorge is open for most of the year, but may be temporarily closed due to adverse weather conditions (heavy rain, risk of landslides) or maintenance work. At El Cardón, we’ll let you know in advance about the gorge’s status and, in the event of a closure, we’ll find alternatives or arrange for your trip to be rescheduled at no extra cost.
¿Qué incluye el precio de la ruta con guía?
The price of the guided Masca Gorge tour includes: a qualified professional guide, a safety helmet, an official permit to access the gorge, a return boat trip from the cove and transport back to the starting point. It does not include food or drink (we recommend bringing a packed lunch and plenty of water).
