The Environment
What makes the Teno Massif so special?
The Teno Massif is the westernmost point of Tenerife and one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity and scenic value in the Canary Islands. Its cliffs, ravines and unspoilt coastline form a unique environment that combines the mountains and the sea in a way you won’t find anywhere else on the island.
From Punta de Teno, Tenerife’s westernmost lighthouse, to the cliffs of Los Gigantes, the area is home to an extraordinary wealth of natural life: tropical pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles and endemic flora that grows only in this corner of the Atlantic.
Here at El Cardón, we’ve been working in this area for over 25 years. We know every path, every cove and every story of the Teno Massif. Our experiences are designed to ensure you take away more than just photos: a genuine connection with the place and its people.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Teno
We’ve put together answers to the most common questions ahead of your visit to the Teno Massif.
¿Qué es el Macizo de Teno y por qué es especial?
The Teno Massif is the oldest geological formation on Tenerife, dating back more than 7 million years. It occupies the north-western tip of the island and has been designated a Rural Park. Its combination of volcanic ravines, sea cliffs and endemic vegetation makes it one of the most valuable ecosystems in the Canary Islands. It is home to the village of Masca, considered one of the prettiest in Spain.
¿Cuál es la mejor época para hacer el Authentic Tour?
The Masca & Teno Authentic Tour is available all year round. The spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) months usually offer the most pleasant conditions: mild temperatures, clear skies and fewer tourists. In summer, temperatures can be higher, especially inland. In winter, the landscape is particularly green and the days are usually sunny.
¿Se garantiza el avistamiento de ballenas y delfines?
The waters of the strait between Tenerife and La Gomera are home to one of the world’s largest resident populations of tropical pilot whales. The likelihood of a sighting is very high (over 95% under normal conditions). However, as these are wild animals living in the wild, we cannot guarantee a 100% sighting rate. Should no cetaceans be sighted, we offer an alternative trip at no extra cost.
¿Es necesaria experiencia previa para el kayak?
No previous experience is required for sea kayaking in Los Gigantes. The activity is designed for beginners and includes a brief instruction session before heading out onto the water. The guide accompanies the group at all times. You simply need to be able to swim and not have any serious heart or respiratory conditions. The activity is not suitable for pregnant women.
¿Qué tipo de bicicletas ofrecéis en Teno?
We have mountain bikes (MTBs) and electric bikes (e-bikes) to suit all sizes. E-bikes are particularly recommended for those who want to enjoy the scenery without the physical exertion of steep climbs. All bikes come with a helmet, lock and route map. We offer guided tours and self-guided hire, depending on your preference.
¿Puedo combinar varias experiencias en el mismo día?
Yes, it is possible to combine certain activities on the same day or on consecutive days. For example, the Authentic Tour in the morning and kayaking or whale-watching in the afternoon. Please get in touch and we’ll put together a bespoke programme tailored to your preferences and availability. For private groups, we offer discounted combined packages.
¿Desde dónde salen las actividades?
The departure points vary depending on the activity. The Authentic Tour includes pick-ups in Puerto de la Cruz, Icod de los Vinos and Garachico. The kayaking and whale-watching tours depart from Puerto de Los Gigantes. The bike tours are based in Buenavista del Norte. For all activities, we will specify the exact meeting point in your booking confirmation.
¿Qué incluye el precio del VIP Tour?
The Masca, Teno and Isla Baja VIP Tour includes: a private vehicle with a driver, a personal guide for the whole day, access to places not included on standard tours, a gastronomic tasting featuring local produce, accident and third-party liability insurance, and complete flexibility regarding timings and stops. The price is per group (up to 6 people), not per person.
